Carlos Alcaraz, the rising star of tennis, recently expressed his aspirations to emulate the legendary rivalry between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, this time with fellow young talent Jannik Sinner.
Their encounter in the semifinals of the Indian Wells Masters showcased the intensity of their burgeoning rivalry. Reflecting on the iconic Nadal-Federer rivalry, Alcaraz shared his insights during an interview with the ATP Tour in Miami. He emphasized the valuable lessons learned from their enduring competition, stating, “They (Nadal and Federer) have had a very beautiful and demanding rivalry at the same time. What I have learned from this rivalry is that you can never fall behind or give up or settle.”
Alcaraz highlighted the importance of continuous improvement and pushing beyond one’s limits, drawing inspiration from the relentless pursuit of excellence demonstrated by Nadal and Federer throughout their careers. “You always have to improve, you always have to raise your level,” he affirmed. “It doesn’t matter if you think that you are at your maximum level, that you can’t give more, you can always give a little more.”
Expressing his hopes for a similar rivalry with Sinner, Alcaraz articulated his admiration for the enduring competitiveness and mutual respect displayed by Nadal and Federer. “Every time one of them lost to the other, they tried to be better to win the next time,” he noted. “And they have done it for a long time, which is something incredible and worth admiring.”
Looking ahead, Alcaraz expressed optimism about the potential for a compelling rivalry with Sinner, envisioning a future where both players push each other to new heights. “I hope both Jannik and I have a long and beautiful future ahead of us,” he said. “That way I hope that I can give my best level and continue growing thanks to him while I see the level he is having.”
