In an amazing display of strength, Marta Kostyuk defeated Anastasia Potapova 6-0, 7-5 to advance to the Indian Wells semifinals.
In the next round, she will play the winner of the match between Caroline Wozniacki and Iga Swiatek. Kostyuk took advantage of the windy conditions on a stormy day in the California dry land, blasting through the opening set in a mere 22 minutes.
It appeared like the second set would go similarly, as Kostyuk jumped up to a 3-0 lead before Potapova pulled off the upset. After that, she broke Kostyuk to get the game back on track, and all of a sudden, Kostyuk was engaged in combat.
Kostyuk expressed her thoughts after the win and said: “Today I was playing the wind, so it was very tricky, and Anastasia is a very tricky opponent. She always fights, so I tried to stay there until the end. I feel I got a little bit passive, waiting. She was making a lot of unforced errors at the beginning of the second set so it was not easy when she was getting back in the game.”
She further added while laughing: “Whoever watches ‘Suits’ knows Harvey Specter said, ‘I don’t play the odds, I play the man.’Today I wasn’t playing the man; I was playing to win. It was very tricky. 6-0, 3-0, is probably the worst score in the world, honestly.”
