Over the past two weeks, Holger Rune’s support staff have gone through significant restructuring. Boris Becker and Severin Luthi, the 20-year-old’s two instructors, both resigned from him in a matter of days. A few weeks later, Rune’s mother, Aneke, chose to step down as his manager and hasn’t gone to tournaments with him since. Now that she has spoken out about their professional split, she explains why it took so long to happen.

Not only did Rune’s instructors quit, but his mother also stopped representing him after he joined IMG management. She also made the decision not to travel with her son as much and was not spotted in Rotterdam’s Rune’s box.

She expressed her thoughts recently about it and said: “Through when Holger became a teenager, the plan was that I would gradually step back more when he could start handling more and more things himself. And I think Holger has matured enormously. There is no longer any filter when he has to convey to his team what he needs or what is important to him.”

Rune’s mother thinks that Dane is in a good place to enjoy some more independence now that he has returned to Patrick Mouratoglou.

She added: “There has always been a plan for an exit, but it required us to be in a place where I could see that Holger himself took the leaf from his mouth and conveyed what he needed. And now he is very clear about what he wants and what he doesn’t want. The reason I didn’t withdraw already last year was that it all became a bit more chaotic than we had expected. So there had to be some kind of stability around Holger. He needs security. There must be recognition among the people he works with. And it’s there now, I can feel it.”
