At the Australian Open on Monday, Coco Gauff impressed everyone by winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-0, showcasing a powerful new serve. Gauff attributes her technique’s improvement to Roddick, saying that she started to toss the ball higher before serving.
With Gauff hitting her fastest serve of 123 mph in the opening set, it had a devastating effect on her opponent. In the second set, the 19-year-old likewise won all points from her opening serve.
Gauff spoke about Roddick’s influence after her win and said: “I don’t think I could have gotten anybody else better to help me. I think that my service has improved. I think I just need to continue to trust it and trust all the work that I did in the offseason. I want to become a more aggressive server.”
She eventually found her rhythm throughout the match inside the Rod Laver Arena, though it took her some time. She further said: “I just told myself, ‘I feel good, I look good, so just have fun. That was able to relax me a little bit. That’s why I play tennis—to have fun, so I remind myself. I was able to calm down and then play well—not my best, but good tennis from that point on. I was just playing much deeper and much freer.”
