Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic’s long-standing rivalry has taken a new turn since the Serbian player made fun of British fans during the Davis Cup quarterfinal. Italy, who were playing in the final for the first time in twenty-five years, defeated Serbia 2-1 after Serbia defeated Great Britain 2-0 to get to the semi-finals.
After Djokovic told British fans to quiet down during his post-match speech, Murray spoke out about the Serbian’s actions.
While playing Cameron Norrie, Djokovic noticed that the British fans were deliberately trying to upset him, and they persisted in singing and making noise during his victory speech. Djokovic said, “Learn how to show respect to players,” but then yelled, “Shut up.”
Djokovic later said: “Disrespect, but again, that’s something I kind of have to be prepared for. You know, in the Davis Cup, it’s normal that sometimes fans step over the line, but, you know, in the heat of the moment, you react too, and you, in a way, how can I say, show that you don’t allow this kind of behavior?”
After Djokovic’s remarks, Murray responded on X and seemed to take a dig at the Serbian while saluting British supporters for their support in Malaga, Spain. He wrote: “Tough one for the guys in Malaga last night, @DavisCup. Huge thanks to all the fans who made the big effort to travel out there and create a brilliant atmosphere for the player.”
