Holger Rune talked about working with tennis legend Boris Becker after training with the German for a week. Rune said Becker gave him advice when he was younger and emphasized the importance of working with someone who has gone through similar experiences as him.
Rune was accompanied by six-time Grand Slam champion Becker for a week of training in Monaco last week ahead of his participation at this week’s 2023 Stockholm Open. At the ATP 250 tournament in the Swedish capital, Rune is the defending champion after defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the 2022 final match.
Rune has had a rough run of it, losing nine of his last ten games after making it to the Wimbledon quarterfinals in July. Prior to the recent China Open in Beijing, where he won his first match since Wimbledon, he said that he was fit again after suffering from a back injury.
Rune talked about his week of training with former world No. 1 Becker in an interview, with news of a partnership supposedly in the making.
Rune expressed his thoughts about Becker and said: “It was a really good week of training. I have known Boris for a long time. He follows tennis a lot in general and he has written to me a few times. Also when I was a little younger, he gave me some tips and tricks. There he showed that he supports me.”
He added: “You can feel it. That’s really a big difference. He can feel what I’m feeling. He can’t just say what he thinks I’m feeling, but he can feel it because he’s been in those situations himself. So it’s a different sensation and feeling. It is definitely a good thing to have someone who has tried it himself.”
