Serena Williams and Federer’s chances to play in Rome

Serena Williams return is imminent while Federer’s status is still a mystery.

Serena Williams and Roger Federer

Serena Williams is ready to return from her injury at the upcoming Italian Open. This has been confirmed by tournament director Sergio Palmieri who told The Associated Press on Friday that he spoke with Williams agent. Serena’s agent said that the American has already reserved her rooms and is all set to be there a couple of days earlier for the event which is set to take place on May 13th to 19th.

Ever since she withdrew from her third round match at the Miami Open which took place in March, Williams hasn’t played. She withdrew from the tournament because of a previously undisclosed left knee injury.

Federer’s status is still a question mark

Federer’s recently revealed schedule shows that he will play at the Madrid Open which is all set to take place next week. This will be his only warmup for the French Open which will begin on the 26th of May. An interesting tidbit is that Federer has skipped the clay season for the last two years.

Palmieri has commented about the fact that it’s impossible to predict if Federer will play. Palmieri said that knowing Federer, Federer will only come if he’s playing well. Even though Federer is a four-time runner up to the Italian Open, he has never won it which makes it one of the few significant trophies that he hasn’t added to his arsenal of trophies.

Only time will tell if Federer will play.
