EXPLAINED. Why Maria Sharapova will back Jannik Sinner and not Carlos Alcaraz

Maria Sharapova said that Jannik Sinner is a player she supports and expressed her admiration for the Italian's modest approach to the sport.

Maria Sharapova With Jannik Sinner

The tennis legend Maria Sharapova revealed that Jannik Sinner is a player she constantly cheers for and said she appreciates the Italian’s modest attitude toward the game.

The five-time Grand Slam winner said that she enjoys seeing the younger players and believes there is nowadays an energy about the men’s game. Sinner regarded Sharapova as one of the finest champions as the two worked out and interacted together. As for the 22-year-old’s ideal mixed doubles partner, Sharapova was chosen.

In an interview with The Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast, former world No. 1 Sharapova named Sinner as the male professional tennis player she supports.

Sharapova stated her remarks about Sinner and said: “You know, the last coach of my career coached Sinner for several years, so I got to play with him a few times. So, you know, I’m always rooting for him. I just like his humble approach to the sport.”

She added: “I love seeing the younger generation. There’s an aura about the men’s game, it’s very evident. They have different styles of play, and different personalities, from different parts of the world, and it’s just fun to see these rivalries come together. I think the men’s game is in a good state.”

Given the fact that Sharapova and Sinner were both instructed by the Italian Riccardo Piatti in their professional careers, the two got the opportunity to play together.
