Maria Sharapova, a former world No. 1, reportedly stated that she was delighted to see Coco Gauff win the 2023 US Open despite the fact that the final wasn’t of the finest level.

Coco Gauff, who is only 19 years old, is the youngest player to win the New York Major since Serena Williams in 1999. Gauff found the event particularly special because it was the 50th anniversary of the US Open’s introduction of equal prize money.

In the most recent episode of The Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast, Maria Sharapova talked about Coco Gauff winning her first major and discussed why she wanted to be there to see it.

Sharapova stated her remarks about Gauff’s US Open win and said: “Yes, yes, I couldn’t miss that, I just felt like it was a match that would.. seeing Coco on that stage and all the expectations from the beginning of the tournament…I didn’t think it was the highest quality match because there were so many nerves on I think both sides…I was so happy to see Coco win.”

She added: “I have been saying this for years I think she has the ability to transcend the sport, bridging entertainment and sport and culture and fashion. She has such a great voice and most importantly she is an amazing competitor which is just like the full package and it came together for her in New York City. So I wanted to be there.”
