Serena wins her 20th slam at the Roland Garros!

It’s Serena no.20!

The world no.1 has won one of the toughest slams of her incredible career in Paris. Serena has been fighting with a nasty flu since the 3rd round to get to the final in a spectacular way after vomiting on court and rescuing a desperate score-line against Bacsinszky.

The American had to spend the hours before the final in bed raising lots of doubts about her ability to compete.  Eventually Serena found the energy to go on court and incredibly enough she was even trashing her opponent Safarova to get a fast 6-3 4-1 40-15 lead. Then the American got tight to commit 3 double faults and Safarova found her way back to win the second set and lead 2-0 in the decider. At that point Serena found her groove once again and she won 6 consecutive games to grab yet another slam (6-3 6-7 (2) 6-2. Match Stats.

Serena: Things got complicated

The new French Open champion commented “It got really complicated today,” Williams said. “I was getting a little bit nervous, and Lucie was just playing great. She was a magnificent opponent. She was playing very aggressive and she had no fear.

To win my 20th Grand Slam title at Roland Garros is very special for me because I haven’t always had the most success here. I want to thank all of the fans – it’s just a dream that I’ve won this title.”

With this title Serena is just 2 slams away from Steffi Graf…still working on it.

Great stuff!
