Wawrinka upsets Federer

Stan Wawrinka surprises everybody to defeat Federer in straight sets.

Roger displayed quite a good form this year on clay and a great draw gave him a good chance to reach the final in Paris. The Maestro edged a below par Monfils in the 4th round and he was widely expected to beat Wawrinka in the quarters, but Stan disagreed.

The match was marred by a strong wind that made things tricky for both players. Roger didn’t seem to play that badly, but he was lacking that “greatness” that is essential for him to go deep in big tournaments. On the other side Stan Wawrinka looked set for a solid performance to never implode in the crucial moments. Eventually “Stanimal” never dropped a service game to break Roger 3 times (once in the first set and twice in the second). The third set was decided at the tiebreak that Stan won without struggling too much. The final score was 6-4 6-3 7-6 (4). Match Stats.

Federer: I just need to keep it up

Roger commented “I’m already thinking what I’m going to do over the next few days, because Wimbledon is going to be a big goal for the season. That’s where I want to play my best. It’s a big goal for me. I want to win it, and I feel like my game is good. It’s been solid, it’s been positive, and I have just got to keep it up now.”

Wawrinka: Today was my best match on clay

Stan was jubilant for the victory “Today was my best match on clay and it’s an incredible moment for me. I’m playing good tennis and I’m really pleased to be in the Paris semi-finals for the first time. I’m a little bit surprised to win that match in three sets and the way I did, but it’s a great feeling.”

Next vs. Tsonga

Stan will play Tsonga in the semifinal. Head to head is 3-all, 3-2 for the Swiss on clay.
