In her opening match of the Western & Southern Open, Iga Swiatek defeated Zheng Qinwen with a decisive victory. She also asked for a decrease in the number of hateful comments made on social media against her and her coaching staff.
While talking to the media she said: “Today’s match wasn’t perfect, and we all saw that, but the amount of hate and criticism that me and my team get after even losing a set is just ridiculous. I would encourage people to be more thoughtful when they comment on the Internet.”
Swiatek expressed her thoughts and stated: “Even though I didn’t start the match well, I would love for people to see how I problem-solved and got out of trouble. I’m trying to be the best kind of person and player as possible. I just wanted to encourage people on the internet to be more positive and also to see the positive side of what we’re doing.”
The top seed expressed shock at the standard allegedly expected of her in light of the amount of criticism that followed.

Iga Swiatek will play the world no.10 Marketa Vondrousova in the quarter on Friday at 11:00 am on CENTER COURT. Their head to head is 1-0 for Swiatek.
