Carlos Alcaraz has described the awkward encounter he had in an elevator with five-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova at the Canadian Open.
Carlos Alcaraz was “shocked” by the encounter and initially doubted that the former Russian star he was standing next to was who he claimed to be.
Alcaraz shared the details of his encounter with tennis legend Sharapova and said: “I watch her, you know, a lot of matches,” Alcatraz explained. “She was a great tennis player. She was probably one of the best players in the world. And I was in shock because I didn’t expect her to be here in Toronto. And she was first in the lift and it was, she is Maria or not? You know what I mean?”
He further added: “But it was great to meet her and know that she’s going really well and, you know, she’s life right now. And talk a little bit with her – it was really nice.”
Alcaraz got off to a strong start at the Canadian Open by defeating Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6 in the second round.
