Novak Djokovic had a rather conflicting start of the season.
The world no.1 was fantastic in Australia where he won his 15th slam after demolishing an in-form Rafael Nadal in the final (6-3 6-2 6-3). The Serbian sensation decided to take a prolonged break after Melbourne to get back to competitions for the Sunshine Double where he had a fantastic record.
However, this year, Nole surprised for the wrong reason after he crashed out in the 3rd round in Indian Wells and the 4th round in Miami while he was the hot favorite to win both events.
Djokovic having doubts about playing in Monte Carlo
During the press conference following Djokovic’s defeat in Miami, the world no.1 looked extremely distressed, and after somebody asked if he was going to play in Monte Carlo, he replied: “I don’t know, we will see.”
However, Nole had the same reaction when he was upset last year by Marco Cecchinato in the Roland Garros quarters. Djokovic said that he wasn’t sure if he wanted to play on grass and he ended up winning Wimbledon.
Djokovic confirmed to play
To reassure his fans, the world no.1 added Monte Carlo to his list confirming on his official website that it will be his next tournament.
Even if Monte Carlo is one of Nadal’s domains, Djokovic won the tournament twice in 2013 (d. Nadal) and 2015 (d. Berdych). Djokovic was the runner-up in 2009 and 2012 after losing to Nadal on both occasions.
The world no.1 will be the favorite to win this edition after the King of Clay.
