It’s Federer no.85!

What a great week for Roger Federer!

The world no.2 was expected to have a walk in the park in the ATP250 in Istanbul, but eventually he had to fight till the end… and this made this win sweeter.

Roger had to edge Gimeno-Traver and a tough Schwartzman in the previous 2 rounds and an in-form Cuevas was looming in the final. Pablo was in great form and a huge threat for Federer especially after his great performance in the semifinal when he defeated Dimitrov 6-2 6-4 in just 75 minutes. So Roger knew the danger, but he was still too good in the first set (6-3) to then engage in a nasty battle in the 2nd set that Roger won at his 5th MP after saving 3 set points. The final score was 6-3 7-6 (11). Match Stats

Roger: It has been a crazy week

The Maestro was extremely happy for winning this trophy “It’s been a tough week; four tough matches. I thought the final was my best one. I’m very happy. I’m very proud to be the first champion here at the first-time tournament here in Istanbul. In Turkey, I’ve had a wonderful week. On and off the court, I was able to visit the city a little bit, meet a lot of people, enjoy the crowd support and experience Turkey.

It’s been crazy, in a good way, and I hope I can do it again one day. Right now, I’m just happy I was able to win the tournament. It’s always the best feeling for an athlete to be the champion at the end of a long tough week.”

This is the first clay court title for Roger since 2012 after Madrid (well… that was on blue clay); the last title on red clay was the Roland Garros in 2009 !!!

This is Roger’s 3 title of the season (after Brisbane and Dubai) and the 85th of his immense career…

…more to come…

85… AND IT’S ALWAYS FUN!
