After his triumph in Geneva in 2017, the former World No. 3 Wawrinka was aiming to win his maiden ATP title. Despite putting on some of the most amazing comeback performances, Stan Wawrinka has struggled with injuries for a long time and has been unable to play consistently on the ATP tour.
The 16-time tour-level champion offered himself a chance to make history by winning his first final in three years and nine months and turned the oldest championship winner on the tour at the age of 38.
But a determined Alexei Popyrin came back from a set down to deny Wawrinka the chance, leaving the Swiss devastated as he addressed the audience following the heartbreaking defeat.
Wawrinka was overcome with emotion by the defeat and broke down in tears during his speech. But he managed to save enough stamina to express gratitude to the supporters. He said: “I know it’s so stupid to cry, but I love this sport so much. You make it really special. Amazing week. Hopefully I can come back. Thank you for the support. Thank you for being here. Hopefully I see you next year.”
