Serena Williams retires from Miami

The tennis fans and the Miami Open organization have been unlucky on Saturday as they lost 2 great players on the same day: Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams.

The world no.1 lost to the Taiwanese Su-Wei Hsieh while Serena was not fit to compete.

Why Serena Williams retired from the Miami Open?

The American was already struggling in her opening match when she won in 3 sets against Rebecca Peterson. Unfortunately, she declared in a statement that she was not able to compete anymore at the Miami Open.

Serena Williams’ statement

“I am disappointed to withdraw from the Miami Open due to a left knee injury. I hope to be back next year to play at this one-of-a-kind tournament in front of the incredible fans here in Miami.”

Williams had also to withdraw from the previous tournament in Indian Wells because of a viral illness.
