Rafa clarifies his thoughts about Nick Kyrgios after their spat in Acapulco

Nadal Kyrgios handshake

Rafael Nadal has a somewhat conflicting relationship with Nick Kyrgios.

The Australian had his first “important” win of his career after he upset the Spaniard back in 2014 (Wimbledon). Rafa’s problems with Kyrgios is that he doesn’t like facing players like him that often go for broke to disrupt his rhythm.  Furthermore, on a different plan, the Mallorcan has always shown respect for everyone which is an area that Kyrgios is still lacking (big time).

Last week, Kyrgios defeated Nadal for the 3rd time in his career after winning an impossible match receiving from a 3-6 deficit in the decisive tiebreak. The Australian was in free flow with his antics during that match, and Rafa didn’t like it at all to give an incredibly cold handshake soon after the contest.

Later, the world no.2 had nasty words for the Australian to say that he lacked respect for everyone.

“He disrespects everyone.” Nadal attacks Kyrgios

Rafa is currently in Indian Wells where he is about to start his run at the ATP1000. When asked about his thoughts about Kyrgios, he commented

“Everyone is free to do whatever, but in my opinion, he has an impact on the younger generation. He is young; he’s a famous player. And we need to show good values for the kids that are watching on television. One of the best things our generation have, with me, Roger, Novak, was always respect for each other, for our opponents, for the sport and respect for the crowd. And I believe that’s a good example for our sport and the new generation.

But I never said anything too negative about Nick even if he takes it more personally. But being honest, was not against his serving, he’s free to do that the way he wants. I don’t feel disrespected by this at all. I understand this part of the game and I think this is a good show for the game too.”

The good news for Rafa and Nick is that in Indian Wells they are on opposite sides.
