Wawrinka wins the title in Rotterdam

Stan Wawrinka didn’t win the Australian Open, but he is still having a great year!

The Swiss has won the ATP event in Chennai to now triumph in Rotterdam. Stan defeated Tomas Berdych in the final after recovering from a set down to win 4-6 6-3 6-4. The key was of course in the 3rd set when Stan won a decisive 4-1 lead (2 breaks). Then the Swiss was broken in the 6th game (4-2), but that was too late for Berdych that couldn’t recover the deficit.

Wawrinka: It has been an amazing week

Stan had a very rough path to this title as he won 3 matches (of 5) in 3 sets and in the other 2 matches he had to play (and win) 3 tie-breaks. “It’s been an amazing week. It wasn’t easy, but every match I found my way. It was a great final. Tomas was playing really well, but I’m happy to turn that match for me and win the title. It’s my first500 title and winning indoors is something special for me personally. It’s always amazing to win a trophy. It’s the best feeling.”

Berdych: I need to work harder

Tomas was not in the right mood to comment “I’m disappointed with the way the match finished. There can only be one winner. I had my chances in the beginning of the second set and I didn’t make them so I think that cost me the match. I can see some positive things because the last time I played him it went a completely different way. I was in control in the beginning and the small differences decided it today. Next time I need to work harder.”

This is Wawrinka’s 9th career title, the 2nd of the season. The Swiss will now go to Marseille for some more.

First ATP 500!!! So happy !!! #9thTitle #Allez #Happy
