Janowicz retires, Gasquet wins title in Montpellier

Unlucky day for Jerzy Janowicz. The big serving Pole had a fantastic week to be 1 step from winning his maiden title, but he was stopped by a sickness.  This allowed Richard Gasquet to win his 11th title, the 2nd in Montpellier.

It was clear from the warm-up that something was wrong with Jerzy: the Pole looked absolutely “static” on his legs and his body language was awful (because of the sickness). As soon as the match started it was clear he had no defense to retire when he was 0-3 0-30 down.  Jerzy lost the last 14 points and at the end his shots were not even close to the lines.

Unfortunately Jerzy was booed by the public, but he couldn’t really do much (he looked finished).

Janowicz: I am extremely disappointed

Jerzy commented “I’m extremely disappointed because I felt pretty OK the whole week. I saved six match points in the first round and after that I played pretty good tennis. Two days ago, I got sick. I haven’t slept in almost two days. I had a fever and the flu and I’m so weak. There was not much that I could do today.”

Gasquet: He couldn’t play at all

Richard commented “I knew he was sick when we were warming up. I saw very quickly at the beginning of the match that he couldn’t play at all. Anything can happen, so even though I knew he was sick, I stayed focused. I had a great week, with solid matches. It’s good for the rest of the season. I felt that I played well this week. I feel 100 per cent and ready for the season.”

Gasquet received a nice chck of 80.000 Euro for winning the title (38.000 for the final!). Good stuff!
