Djokovic tames Wawrinka to reach the AO final

Once again Novak Djokovic’s tennis proved to be too (mentally) solid for Stan Wawrinka. The Serb had a tricky task ahead against the Swiss especially after the history they had in the past 2 years in Melbourne where they have played two epic 5 setters.

Also this year their encounter went to the 5th set, but the quality of their tennis was much below the one we have seen in 2013 and 2014. During this semifinl both players went through lots of ups and downs to split the first 2 sets. Then the decider was very strange with Wawrinka melting down and losing at 0. The final result was 7-6(1), 3-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0.

Nole will now have the chance to win his 5th Australian Open.

Match Stats

Djokovic won 154 points vs. Wawrinka’s 139. The mind-blowing number of the match is the unforced errors of Wawrinka (69) and the 5 breaks suffered from Djokovic (before the semi Nole has conceded just 1 break in the entire tournament). Match Stats

Djokovic: Still proud of fighting

Nole wasn’t happy with his tennis level to comment “I did not play at the level that I intended before the match. It was very emotional, very tense, as it always is against a top player in semi-finals of a Grand Slam. Of course, judging by the last two matches we played at the Australian Open, we could expect something like that, five-setter. So the battle was great.
I’m sure everybody who came to watch the match live and watched it on TV were expecting a five-set match. It’s what we delivered for them. It was not intentional from our side to play five sets, but very, very few details, very few points, very few shots can decide a winner of these matches. That’s what happened tonight.”

Wawrinka: It was tough to focus

Stan commented “I think there were a lot of ups and downs… It was not the best match. I think I’m physically well… Really happy with my level. I told my coach before the match and already yesterday that I was mentally completely dead and no battery. [It was] tough to focus on what I wanted to do. [It was] tough to focus on my game; and that’s what happened today. I was telling my box it was tough for me to stay with him, to find a way to win points. Because I was just trying to fight and to make some good choice, but today I was just not there.”

The final

Nole will play Murray for the title. Head to head is 15-8 for Nole that is the favorite to win this title.
