“Kosovo is the heart of Serbia.” Djokovic gets political at the French Open

Novak Djokovic's victory at the French Open highlighted the need for Serbia to stop violence in Kosovo, where 25 of its soldiers were hurt during fights with ethnic Serbs.

Djokovic Kosovo

Novak Djokovic won a relatively easy first round at the French Open after defeating the world no.114 Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-3 6-2 7-61. However, the Serbian legend hit the headline for what happened soon after the match. Djokovic wrote the following on the camera lens after defeating Aleksandr Kovacevic in his opening match at the French Open: “Serbia’s heart is in Kosovo. Stop the violence.”

When he was making these remarks, the NATO-led Kosovo Force (KFOR) peacekeeping unit reported that 25 of its soldiers had been hurt during fights with ethnic Serbs in northern Kosovo. While Kosovo proclaimed its independence in 2008, Belgrade and Kosovo have remained rivals ever since because Belgrade refused to recognize Kosovo’s sovereignty.
