Andy Murray ends (probably) his career after emotional match at the Australian Open

Andy loses to Roberto Bautista Agut a match played in an unreal atmosphere

Andy Murray

Weird stuff in Melbourne as the great Andy Murray played (probably) the last match of his huge career.

The Brit was opposed to the world no.24 Roberto Bautista Agut from Spain that is playing fantastic tennis. Robert has recently defeated Novak Djokovic in the semifinal in Doha and it was clear that he was a very tough customer for Andy Murray that on Friday he announced his imminent retirement from tennis during an emotional press conference.

Is Murray really going to retire?

The situation is a bit confused. In fact, Andy has been struggling for long with a hip injury and he had also an operation last year in January, Unfortunately, the British legend didn’t fully recover even after he put a lot of work during the build-up of the new season.

Andy played a warm-up match with Novak Djokovic a few days ago and he withdrew after he was completely outplayed when he was 1-6 1-4 down. That put the former world no.1 in a horrible mental state since he understood that his physical condition was not good enough to compete at his usual stellar levels.

Therefore, during the press conference, Andy announced his imminent retirement, but he was unable to specify when that would have happened and in the on-court interview after his 1st round he said that he may try to go for a big operation.

The match against Roberto Bautista Agut

Andy played like a lion for the entire match. After being 4-6 4-6 down it seemed as Murray was about to bow in straight sets. On the contrary, he found his way back winning to consecutive sets at the tiebreak and bringing the affair to the decider. Unfortunately, the Brit was clearly not fit to stay with Roberto in the 5th set and even if he tried everything he could, he lost the encounter 6-4 6-4 6-7 (5) 6-7 (4) 6-2 after slightly more than 4 hours.

The emotions

All Melbourne Arena was with Andy from the very beginning till the very end. The fans were roaring with the Scot after he won the 3rd and the 4th set, and they gave a huge standing ovation after the match.

Andy left the court hinting that he will try to have a “big operation”, but he is not sure if that will be successful. Confusing, but emotional.
