Stefanos Tsitsipas reached the second round of the Australian Open after edging Matteo Berrettini in a tough 4-setter in front of a very supporting Greek community.

The match

Ranked no.52, the Italian didn’t drop a single service game in the opener to win surprisingly the opening set at the tiebreak.

Things could have become nasty for Stefanos that has recently struggled to play under heavy sunny conditions in Perth.  However, the Greek managed to regroup to win the second and the third set.

The match got “sticky” again the 4th set when the pair had to play another breaker. Stefanos got a 4-2 lead, but the Italian fought back (4-4). Finally, it was the Greek to take advantage of his superior experience to win the match 6-7 (3) 6-4 6-3 7-6 (4).

Stefanos will face either Troicki or Carballes Baena in the 2nd round.
