Stefanos Tsitsipas, the two-time defending champion at the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters, is presently competing in his first clay court tournament of the year, where he will face either Nicolas Jarry or Alexei Popyrin in his second match.
In winning two clay Masters 1000 titles, two additional trophies in Estoril and Lyon, as well as six other runner-up places, he has achieved some of his best performances on this surface. In a recent interview with L’Equipe, the runner-up at the 2021 French Open highlighted the positive aspects of the red dirt while pointing out the drawbacks of faster courts. The “purest form of tennis” is played on clay, according to the Greek athlete.
“When it’s super fast you don’t construct anything. On clay, go ahead, find a nice tactic, good angles. The clay is like an artist’s canvas. You can paint on it; it’s all its beauty. The purest form of tennis is played on red clay,” said Stefanos.

At the moment ranked no.58, the Chilean has a compiled 16-5 record in 2023. The Chilean is playing in Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters where he ousted the world no.20 Borna Coric 6-2 6-3.
Nicolas Jarry will square off with the world no.94 Alexei Popyrin in the 2nd round on Wednesday at 11:00 am on COURT 9. In the past, they have never competed against each other so far in top tournaments.
Jarry clinched 1 title in 2023 in Santiago.

Stefanos Tsitsipas and Nicolas Jarry squared off just once. Their current head to head is 1-0 for Jarry. When they played, Nicolas Jarry won 6-4 3-6 6-4 in the 2nd round in Hertogenbosch (Libema Open) in June 2019.
