Kyrgios Award questioned by Dellacqua manager

Nick Kyrgios is the man of the year in Tennis Australia. The teenager is the new kid on the block, he has tennis, personality etc etc, but probably there is too much hype on him.

Few days ago Lleyton Hewitt has already expressed his concerns about the overwhelming attention on Nick stating that there are some other players in Australia that do not deserve to be neglected (Tomic and Kokkinakis are the first ones in the list).

Now Casey Dellacqua’s manager, Sam Maxwell, has something to say about Nick’s Newcombe Medal

There have been better players than Kyrgios …

Maxwell commented “It is my understanding that the Newcombe Medal is awarded to ‘Australia’s most outstanding elite tennis player for the year. In 2014, Lleyton Hewitt won two singles titles while Sam Stosur was our highest-ranked player at world No. 22. If we are talking about consistency at the highest level over the whole year, I feel that the year Casey Dellacqua has had would have made her a deserving winner.”

… it had to be Dellacqua

Then he added “I find it difficult to understand how a player who has won three times the number of matches over the year, won more matches in Grand Slams in 2014 and also has a ranking half that of the winner is not recognized. I question whether the decision to award Nick the medal was based on the hype surrounding him and the exposure it would then generate.”

In Kyrgios’ defense we can say that when Rafa was rising he has also generated some unhappiness at home… but he won the Rolang Garros when he was at Nick’s age…!
