Serena, Sharapova strong in Beijing

Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova do not disappoint at the China Open.

Serena

The world no.1 mauls Tsvetana Pironkova 6-2 6-3 in just 72 minutes. Serena was in her terrific zone to give no chances to the Bulgarian.

After the match the American commented “Tonight I was aware that I wanted to start out strong, and I think that was the main difference. I was just trying to make sure I was able to win a game early on.”

Serena will play a dangerous Lucie Safarova in the 3rd round. Head to head is 7-0 for the American that is the hot favorite to get through.

Sharapova

Maria was absolutely ruthless against rising star Elina Svitolina. The Russian super-star conceded just 4 games to the 20 year-old to win 6-2 6-2 in just 85 minutes.

Maria commented “It was great to have a good start to the match. She’s had a lot of success this year and had a good tournament last week, so it was a tough second round opponent and I’m really happy to get through. She made me hit a lot of balls, she’s a really good mover from side to side, so I tried to open up the court a little bit when I could. Even though the score wasn’t close, a lot of the games went to deuce and it was tough at times out there.”

Maria will play Carla Suarez Navarro in the 3rd round. Head to head is 1-all. The Russian remains the favorite to win this match.
