Coach Mouratoglou explains why Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune are luckier than Tsitsipas and Medvedev

Patrick Mouratoglou had a very interesting point about the new generation represented by Carlos Alcaraz, Holger Rune, and Felix Auger Aliassime

Holger Rune And Carlos Alcaraz

Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune had a fantastic season. The Spaniard ended 2022 at the top of the rankings at just 19 years of age after claiming his first slam title at the recent US Open. Rune also had a great year, finishing ranked number 11 after conquering 3 main titles at the ATP level, including the ATP1000 in Bercy.

Coach Mouratoglou about their success

Rune is currently coached by Patrick Mouratoglou who used to mentor Serena Williams for many years. Patrick had an interesting point saying that the new generation (ie. Alcaraz, Rune, Felix Auger Aliassime, etc) is luckier than the previous one, represented by the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev, because it did not have to face Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in their prime.

“The generation of Medvedev, Tsitsipas, Rublev, etc. was unlucky because they had to deal with prime Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic,” Patrick said. “The younger generation, in the form of Rune, Alcaraz and Auger-Aliassime, has not had to deal with this at the moment, so they still believe that they can do anything. This is their advantage. They lost a lot in the games against them. It hurt their confidence a little.”
