After winning the 2021 US Open title, Emma Raducanu gave a boost to British tennis. The Billy J King Cup has been recently staged in Glasgow and there is the opportunity to see the WTA Finals be played in the UK next year.

The WTA has been struggling to find a proper replacement for the array of tournaments that used to be scheduled in China. The season’s finale was awarded to Shenzhen, but that was not possible anymore after China implemented the so-called and controversial “Zero-Covid” policy that makes it impossible to plan any international event. Furthermore, the relationship between the WTA and the Chinese government is not that great after the well-known controversy around Peng Shuai.

The WTA Finals in the UK?

The WTA recently announced the 2023 calendar outlining the tournaments that will be staged up to the US Open. The organization is still trying to find a solution to replace the Asian swing. In addition, the WTA needs to find a permanent location to stage the Finals. This year, the season’s final was played in Fort Worth, but the attendance was more than disappointing.

Talking to Express Sport, a spokesman from the WTA confirmed that they are looking for a place for the Finals and the UK could be a viable candidate.

The WTA’s priority for the WTA Finals is providing a world-class sporting event for players, partners and fans,” he said.

“We will make our decision in the next several months about the location of the WTA Finals for next year. If we are in a position to seek a new location, we welcome any discussions from interested parties in the UK or other countries that share the passion to create an industry-leading event to showcase women’s tennis.”
