Venus Williams and Halep crash out the US Open

The US Open women’s draw loses another couple of top players: Venus Williams and Simona Halep.

Venus

The former world no.1 was expected to beat Sara Errani, but she fell after a rather odd match. The American was bagelled (6-0) in the opening set to serve a bagel in the second. Finally Venus and Sara had a “normal” set in the decider, and it was the Italian to win the decisive tiebreak . The final result was 6-0 0-6 7-6 (5). Match Stats.

Venus was still happy after the match to comment “I really just have to emphasize that I think she played really well. I think she just played one of the best matches of her life. You know, that’s pretty much what I can say. But the future’s looking bright. I wish I could’ve taken it further today, but there will be others. I think the more I play, the better I’ll be. I’ll try to remember not to make that many errors in the next matches. But credit to my opponent, because she didn’t make the errors. She played tough today.”

Halep

Simona was widely expected to defeat qualifier and world no.121 Lucic-Baroni from Croatia. But eventually the Romanian lost in straight sets 7-6 (2) 6-2. At 32 years of age Lucic-Baroni is definitely playing the tournament of her life to reach the 4th round after defeating players like Muguruza and Halep both in straight set.

Mirjana will play Sara Errani for a place in the quarters. The played each other only once in Palermo 2010 when Sara won 6-0 7-6 (4). What about another upset?
