Sharapova survives Muguruza to advance in Montreal

Maria Sharapova had a tough start in Toronto.

The Russian beauty had to face rising start Garbine Muguruza that has the tennis to beat anyone in the world. Maria had already to dig dip against the Spaniard in the French Open quarters (1-6 7-5 6-1) after Garbine did trash the great Serena Williams in the second round (6-2 6-2).

In Montreal, Sharapova had to recover once again a 1 set deficit against Garbine to finally win 4-6 6-3 6-1. The key moment was in the 2nd set when Maria managed to regroup when she was 1 set a and break down to win 5 of six game and bring the set to the decider. Then it was all about Maria. Match Stats.

Sharapova

Maria commented “It’s been a few weeks since I’ve been in a competitive atmosphere. It’s always quite different than practice no matter how much you train. Once you step on the court, you feel the energy from the crowd and you get inspired by everything, but you’re ultimately a bit rusty. I’m just happy that I got through that and won today because I had a very tough opponent.”

Next vs. Suarez Navarro

Maria will play Suarez Navarro in the 3rd round. The Spaniard is having a great season even if her latest results were not the best. Head to head is 1-0 for Maria that is the favorite to get to the 4th round.
