Naomi lost her first match of the Red Group against an excellent Sloane Stephens in 3 sets. 7-5 4-6 6-1. The Japanese was not at her very best against the American to often miss her forehand and struggling with her nerves. However, that was probably a good learning curve for Osaka, and she is expected to be much more settled against the German.
Kerber
Currently ranked no.2, Angelique was beaten in the opening match by Kiki Bertens 1-6 6-3 6-4. Now “coachless,” the German is looking forward to winning her first match of these Finals.
