Roger Federer expected to face a tough opponent in Shanghai when he learned he had to face an in-form Daniil Medvedev, and in fact, he had a tricky one.

The Russian has won the title in Tokyo coming straight from the qualifications and after playing remarkable tennis.

The match

Things looked pretty good for Roger after he broke Medvedev in the very first game. However, the Russian got back that break in the 4th game (2-2), but it was Federer to conquer the decisive break of the set later (5-4) before winning the opener 6-4.

Federer looked in decent control of the match, but then all of the sudden he was broken in the 10th game of the 2nd set (4-6) and Medvedev brought the contest to a sticky 3rd set.

The Russian was taking more and more confidence, and he started to get pretty close from pulling a big upset after he was leading 4-3 30-30 (on Roger’s serve). However, the Swiss didn’t blink, and after holding his server he went on to conquer the following 2 games.

The Swiss won 6-4 4-6 6-4 after almost 2 hours of a very enjoyable tennis.

Next vs. Bautista Agut

Roger will face Roberto Bautista Agut in the 3rd round. The head to head is 7-0 for Roger, 16-0 in terms of sets.
