Sharapova reaches the Roland Garros quarters after a battle against Stosur

Shaky stuff for Maria Sharapova.

The Russian Beauty had to overcome a slow start against Sam Stosur. After losing the first set 6-3, Maria found herself 4-3 down in the second (she was leading 2-0). At that point it seemed as Stosur had a clear shot at the match, but Sharapova was of a different opinion to start to play like a real champion. Maria won 9 consecutive games to finally win 3-6 6-4 6-0. Match Stats.

Maria: I am happy how it finished

Even if the match had many ups and downs, the Russian was very happy by the outcome “I thought Sam played a really good first set. With that said, I had five break points and I didn’t convert one of them. Against a player who’s a very good server and who uses her serve as a weapon to set up points out there, if you don’t take advantage of those particular moments, she gains a lot of confidence from that and swings and just keeps serving well too.

And it was unfortunate that I gave that break back in the second set, because I thought I had a good start, but overall I’m happy with the way I finished. I think that’s the most important thing.”

Next vs. Muguruza

Maria will play Garbine Muguruza in the quarters. The Spaniard is playing a great tournament after having defeated all players in straight sets and among them there was Serena Williams (!!!).  Head to head is 1-0 for Sharapova. The only match they have played was in Rome 2013 and Maria won 6-2 6-2, but now Muguruza is a completely new player.

Sharapova is the favorite, but an upset wouldn’t be that strange.
