What a shock in Charleston!
Serena was the top seed to be the hot favourite to win this title, but something didn’t really work.
Actually it was clear from the training sessions that something was not working for the American that appeared sluggish… actually dead tired. So even if this was a shock, in reality it had to come.
The start of the match was rather embarrassing with Serena going 0-5 down (!!!). Then the American recovered, but she lost the opener 6-4. The second set was much more even , but eventually the match ended 6-4 6-4 after only 84 minutes.
Serena: I am really tired
The world no.1 commented “I’m really just dead. I need some weeks off where I don’t think about tennis and kind of regroup. I’ve had a long couple of years, and I’m really a little fatigued.”
Cepelova now will play either Vesnina or Cetkovska in the 3rd round.
We didn’t really see that coming!
