Venus Williams falls in the Australian Open first round

That was quite bad for Venus Williams.

The former world no.1 has been saying for some time that she would like to win another slam, but she looks miles away from that.

Venus lost in the first round to Ekaterina Makarova (seed no.22) in 3 sets. Apparently the heat played a big role as Venus fell after a great start (she has won the opening set 6-2). In the last set Venus was leading 3-0 to then just fall apart and commit 21 unforced errors (56 in the entire match!)

Venus: Too many ups and down

Williams wasn’t very happy by her performance to comment “My level was a little bit too up and down. Obviously my error count was a little high. I have to give her a lot of credit, though, she was very determined, played hard.”

Makarova: I had to fight every point

Ekaterina commented “It was a really tough match to play someone like Venus in the first round, she is such a great player. At 3-0 down (in the final set), I decided I had to fight for every point. I just kept fighting and I turned around the match.”

Next vs. Falconi.

Makarova will play world no. 141 Irina Falconi in the second round
