Roger Federer has delighted his fans and beyond for more than 20 years. Unfortunately, as per his own words, retirement is “really getting closer.”
Roger has just turned 40 and during an interesting interview with Schweizer Illustrierte he talks about how he spent his birthday and what are his plans for retirement.
Roger commented:
There may be more to it than you might think. Of course, through tennis, I have seen a lot, seen a lot. But now I would like to hit the repeat button somehow and experience it all over again without the stress, without all the obligations of a player.
Going to see the blossoms of the Japanese cherry trees in Tokyo, taking part in the big season finals of the NBA, NHL or NFL without always having to ask myself, is the long flight possible, does it fit into my training plans?
These will be completely new experiences. Really experience and experience cultures instead of just jetting over them. Discover beautiful parks all over the world with the children – that’s what Mirka and I have longed for a long time. And that is really getting closer now.”
Will Roger Federer play in the US Open?
Federer has just declined to play the ATP1000 in Toronto and Cincinnati because he has been struggling with his knee after the double surgery he had last year. According to reports, the 20 time Grand Slam champion has not started his training and he still has to decide if he will play US Open.
It is highly possible that Roger will not compete in the last slam of the season. The big question mark is if he will compete at all next year. Indeed, it seems it is almost over for him as a professional player.

Currently ranked no.9, the Swiss played his last match on the 7th of July when he capitulated to world no.13 Hubert Hurkacz 6-3 7-6(4) 6-0 in the quarter in Wimbledon (draw).
At the moment, during this season Roger has managed to achieve a 9-4 match record.
