Stefanos Tsitsipas had a very tricky opener in Toronto against Ugo Humbert. Besides having and losing record against the Frenchman, Stefanos Tsitsipas lost a terrible match against Humbert at the recent Olympic Games in Tokyo after he was in full command of the encounter.
It seemed has the situation was on the way to repeat itself in Toronto when Stefanos was not able to serve out the match after he was leading 6-3 5-4. The Greek player also had 5 match points before losing the 2nd set following a huge tiebreak that Stefanos has lost 15-13.
Nevertheless, when it seemed almost obvious that Stefanos Tsitsipas would have crumbled in the deciding set, the newly-minted world number 3 had the Russian start of the third set to gain a quick 5-0 lead before winning the match 6-3 6-713 6-1.
“Fighting spirit”
After the match, Stefanos explained how he won this huge battle against the Frenchman. He said:
“It’s all about the fighting spirit. And I’m someone who doesn’t like to give up.
Honestly, it wasn’t easy out there today. I had to put up a lot of effort and willingness to step it up and be my best today.
Things didn’t work out for me in the second set, plenty of opportunities, but I felt like a spartan in the third set and nothing stopped me. You know, not much to describe it. I just love competition; I love the energy that competition brings.
Through sport, through competition, I am able to show something that I wouldn’t otherwise be able to. Sport has taught me a lot; sport has taught me to be the person that I am to this day, and sport has raised me in a very good way.”
