Serena Williams is in Rome where she will play her first tournament in 3 months. The American legend was meant to be back to competitions on the occasion of the Miami Open but she was stopped that by oral surgery.
Most of the other top players competed in Madrid in the last 2 weeks, but Serena decided not to play in Spain since she felt offended by some remarks raise by the tournament owner Ion Tiriac.
The Romanian commented:
“At her age and with the weight that she [Serena] now has, she doesn’t move as well as she did 15 years ago. Serena was a sensational player. But if she had some decency, she would resign. From all angles.”
Serena Williams’s husband Alexis Ohanian also intervened calling Tiriac a “sexist/racist clown.”
During a press conference in Rome, Serena was asked me why she decided not to play in Madrid. She replied: “comments form that guy? the old old guy … I don’t know! like he still…. hmm”

Currently ranked no.8, Serena Williams played her last match on the 18th of February when she lost to world no.2 Naomi Osaka 6-3 6-4 in the semifinal of the Australian Open (draw).
Until now, during this year Serena has achieved an overall 8-1 record. Serena Williams’s best accomplishment of this year was reaching the semifinal in Melbourne and at the Australian Open.
