US Open final preview: is Rafa the favourite?

Here we are… we have the best possible final in New York!

A world of “buts”…

The world no.1 and the world no.2 will clash for the US Open title.

The rivalry between these two is huge as this will be their 37th match (biggest rivalry in the Open Era) with Rafa leading 21-15… but Nole leads 9-4 on hard courts, but Rafa won the last 2 matches, but Nole won the last final (Montecarlo), but Rafa won the last final in a Slam (Roland Garros)… so many “buts”!!!

Just to add some more “buts” we have to remember that Nole is the world no.1 (and he will stay world no.1 also after this final), but Rafa is comfortably ahead on Nole in the year to date points.

…and the US Open?

Rafa so far was the player that has impressed the most. He left only 1 set and he dropped only  1 service game in the entire tournament. The King of Clay seems to be at his best on this surface, full of confidence and in complete control of the situation.

Nole had a very good tournament till the quarters when he dropped a set to a good Youzhny and to then rally from 1-2 sets down against a terrible Wawrinka in the semis “Nole’s style”.

Who is the favourite?

It’s always hard to say when these two are playing. Everybody expect an epic. In a way it is difficult to think that this match won’t go to the 5th set and it won’t last less than 4 hours.

As we need to pick a winner we go for Rafa. The Spaniard won 5 of the 6 matches against Nole. So the time when the Serb won 7 consecutive finals against Rafa seems to be  far away and now Nadal seems to be a “psychological upper hand”… but…
