Lisicki and Kerber upset in New Haven. Kvitova advances

Tough luck in New Haven for the top players.

After losing Marion Bartoli (well… for retirement), we had to witness some big names to suffer from early losses.

Seed no.5 Roberta Vinci and seed no. 8 Dominika Cibulkova lost in the first round. Now we lost also seed no. 7 Sabine Lisicki (Wimbledon runner up) to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (7-5 6-3)  and seed no. 2 Angelique Kerber to Elena Vesnina (6-2 6-4)

Another couple of seeds had a tough opener as seed no.4 Caroline Wozniacki was lucky to take advantage of a retiring Shuai Peng and seed no.3 Petra Kvitova had to battle in a 3 setter (4-6 6-3 6-3) to defeat Lucky Loser and world no. 49 Annika Beck.

On Wednesday Sara Errani will start her campaign against Ekaterina Makarova (H2H 2-0 for the Italian) and Sloane Stephens will take on Julia Goerges (H2H 1-0 for Sloane).
