Injured Del Potro reaches an unexpected semifinal in Wimbledon

Incredible stuff in Wimbledon as Delpo wins the quarterfinal against Ferrer almost playing on one leg (and that was in straight sets!!!).

So Juan Martin got to his first Wimbledon semifinal playing one of the best tennis of his career being injured… is that quirky enough?

The Fall

Delpo was already badly injured coming to this match to have a really horrifying fall in the first game of the match. It was widely expected a (very early) game over for the match, but Delpo stood up and played a very good match for everybody’s surprise.

Delpo commented “It was the same thing as the third round match. I think it’s going to be dangerous if I’m not careful. I felt a lot of pain in the beginning of the match. The doctor gave me some magic pills and I could finish the match.”

Finally Delpo won the match in 2 hours and 16 minutes blasting 12 aces (no double faults) and without conceding a single break.

From Delpo

“I think I played my best tennis of the tournament. I’m so, so happy to be in the semi-finals. I played my best tennis. I hit really well my forehand and serve. At the end I played my best forehand ever in Wimbledon. I’m lucky the ball was in. It was a big performance from me. I’m so, so happy with my level at this moment. I beat one of the best players this season.” said the Argentine.

The semis against Nole

The semifinal is going to be very tricky for Juan Martin some reasons. First Djokovic is playing really well and he is quite fresh. Second we doubt that Delpo will be able to compete with the world no.1 if he is not 100% fit.

Nole leads 8-3 in head to head matches, but Juan Martin won the last one and also the only match they have played on grass.

The favourite? Nole… for sure.
