Federer survives a tricky 5 setter against Simon to reach an important milestone

It’s Federer no. 900… but that wasn’t easy.

Roger often struggles with Gilles Simon. In 2011 at the Australian Open he had to win in 5 sets and he had to repeat himself this year at the Roland Garros.

The beginning of the match was rather smooth for Roger that won the opener with a comfortable 6-1. Then Simon managed to stay with Roger at the beginning of the second set to break the Swiss in the seven game and give a new perspective to the match. The Frenchman won the second and the third set.

Roger regrouped in the 4th set to achieve a crucial break in the 6th game. That was the second turning point of the match as Roger then broke Simon once again in the 8th game (to win the 4th set) and in the 2nd game of the 5th set. That was game over. Roger kept his service games to win the decider 6-3.

From Roger

Talking about his amazing 900 wins record Roger said “I knew 900 was on the line. I’m just happy I have been able to win a lot of matches throughout my career, myself an opportunity over and over again. I love this game.”

Next vs. Tsonga

Roger will play the next round against another Frenchman. This time he is Tsonga that has defeated Troicki 6-3 6-3 6-3.

Head to head is 9-3 for Roger (1-0 on clay for the Maestro). Roger sometimes has problems with the Frenchman. This year he defeated him in 5 sets in Melbourne and he may still remember Wimbledon 2011 when Roger lost to him in the quarterfinals after being 2 sets up.

Another match… another battle.
