Djokovic, Del Potro, Isner, Ferrer advance – 2012 US Open

No upsets in the lower part of the mens draw. There is one man that is very menacing: Novak Djokovic.

Djokovic – Silva 6-2 6-1 6-2

Nole is in ominous shape to lose an aggregate 7 games in the first 2 rounds. After trashing Lorenzi 6-1 6-0 6-1 in the opener he left only 5 games to Silva in 1h and 39 minutes. The world no.112 couldn’t just cope with Djoker’s tennis.

“It was different conditions today obviously from the first match I played, the night session,” saidDjokovic. “I didn’t know much about my opponent. Never saw him play. So that could have been a difficulty at the start in order to figure out what his game plan is. But I played well from the start to the end.”

Nole will play Benneteau in the 3rd round. Head to head is 4-1 for Nole that has always struggled a bit with the Frenchamn. Nole remains the super favourite.

Del Potro – Harrison 6-2 6-3 2-6 6-3

Delpo ends Harrison’s dreams in 2 hours and 24 minutes. The match wan’s a high quality one as it was riddled with mistakes and unforced errors. Delpo did 3 double faults, he converted only 58% of the points at the net, he committed 32 unforced errors vs. 29 winners. Harrison did 5 double faults, and committed 42 unforced errors vs. 24 winners.

“My first round and today was a big challenge for me to see how my wrist is going and how my level is,” said del Potro. “Always when you win matches everything is better. I’m happy to go through to the third round. I will have another tough match in the third round against Mayer. The tournament is getting worse every day and you have to be 100 per cent from here to the rest.”

Delpo will face Florian Mayer in the next round. Head to head is 3-2 for Delpo (2-0 in a Slam). Mayer won the last match on hard court 6-2 7-5 in 2011 in Sydney.

Isner – Nieminem 6-3 6-7(5) 6-4 6-3

Big Johny got through. The big news here is that he lost a tiebreak! This was a 2h and 30 minutes battle with Isner blasting 23 aces and a whopping 69 winners. The American conceded only 4 break points and 1 break to his opponent.

Isner will play either Kohlschreiber or Paire in the 3rd round.

Ferrer – Sijsling 6-2 6-3 7-6 (12)

David is definitely not in the limelight at the moment, but he is playing a great tennis and he can be a surprise at this US Open edition. It took a couple of hours to defeat Sijsling  with his solid tennis (only 20 unforced errors vs 42 from his opponent).

The seed no.4 will play in the next round against the 2001 US Open Champion LLyeton Hewitt that won 6-3 6-7 (5) 7-6 5-7 6-4 against Muller in 4 hours and 27 minutes (he won 182 points against Muller’s 188). Head to head is 1 all.
