Martina Hingis to play doubles also in New Haven

Is Martina serious about her comeback? Well it seems so! Few days ago she has announced that she would have played the doubles with Daniela Hantuchova in California… and now she says she will play again in New Haven.

The interesting part of it is that the tournament in New Haven is just before the US Open, so… we may have a surprise!

From Martina

“My competitive spirit is still very much alive

I feel in good shape at the moment after playing World Team Tennis.  I love being out on court.

I am very much looking forward to making a return to competitive play at the Southern California Open. I remember winning the singles and doubles here in 1997 and winning the singles again in 1999.”

From the tournament director

There was a very funny comment by Anne Worcester, the tournament director, that said that she has received a very unexpected email, the subject was Hingis, asking for a wild card

“I just about fell off my chair. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I don’t think I’ve ever responded so quickly. Sometimes the good things happen because of a lot of hard work, and sometimes it’s just sheer luck. This one was sheer luck.”

About Martina’s comeback

This would be her second comeback as Martina has already retired at 22 years of age for a series of injuries to her ankle to retire again in 2007 after being banned for 2 years for allegedly use cocaine.

Time to really get back of the game even if she is 32? Well why not!
