Fantastic news from Simona Halep that confirms her participation in the upcoming WTA event in Palermo. The Romanian sensation has not been playing in Palermo for 10 years. The decision comes from the fact that the world no.2 is not keen on playing on hard court in the US so as to focus on the renewed European clay season where she has even more chances to succeed.
Simon announced her participation in the social media saying:
“I’m very happy to announce I will be back in Palermo after ten years. Hope to have a great week over there. See you soon.“

The WTA event in Palermo will take place from the 3rd of August and there is also the participation of some other top players such as home favorite Camila Giorgi (she received a wild card) alongside Sabalenka, Martic, Rybakina, Vondrousova, Sakkari, Mertens, Vekic, Yastremska, Alexandrova, Kuznetsova.
Palermo tournament director Oliviero Palma is obviously excited to have such a great line-up to comment:
“Halep’s participation is exceptional news, it had been decades since Palermo last hosted a former No.1. Our city is very devoted to world tennis, her presence is one of great interest for everybody.
We’ll have Halep, 5 players ranked between number 10 and 20 and 4 between 30 and 40. Today, the cut-off is at the world’s number 69. This year we may define our tournament a Premier, although it is an International”.

At the moment ranked no.2, Simona played her last match on the 22nd of February when she beat Elena Rybakina 3-6 6-3 7-65 in the final in Dubai to win her 20th career title.
Presently, this year Halep has a 10-2 win-loss record. The Romanian clinched 1 title in Dubai.
