Patrick Mouratoglou is one of the most interesting and illuminated tennis coaches on the circuit, and he has the luxury of coaching both Serena Williams and Coco Gauff.
The Frenchman has been pivotal for keeping Serena at the top of the game for so many years when it seemed as her best days were over. Instead, since they partnered (2012), they won together 10 slams and counting.
Patrick knows extremely well Serena and he is well aware about the difficulties she encounered coming from a tough environment. Talking to Eurosport, he recently commented on why he is proud of her.
“Serena especially, coming from a tough neighborhood, the whole Williams family, she had to go through a lot of difficulties, much more than someone who is wealthy and white,” he commented.
Mouratoglou is also impressed with how Coco Gauff is getting more and more vocal in her battle against racism especially after the killing of George Floyd.
“I am proud of Coco, because she is 16 and the way she has been able to support this cause at only 16 years old. I don’t know whether you saw that speech that she made,” he added.
Patrick is particularly active on the #blacklivesmatter side to promote the movement during the Ultimate Tennis Showdown, the event he has recently promoting.
“I don’t think it is a good thing not to be involved, because it is about humans; it is about who we are all of us and it is easy to stay back and not to be involved when you are not personally touched, but you also have to think about others that are not in the same situation as us and have to suffer from it.” he added.
