Why Federer can win again after the operation, says Italian tennis legend

Pietrangeli has an interesting point of view about if it's time for Roger to retire

Roger Federer has just announced that he will be back to competitions only in 2021 following a second procedure to his knee. If everything goes well, the Swiss legend will be back in January after being out from competitions for almost 1 year. Therefore, at 39 years of age, it’s difficult to think that he will be able to compete with the very best after such a long hiatus, but Roger is Roger.

In theory, Federer should retire, however, he can win again

Italian legend Nicola Pietrangeli is still extremely knowledgeable about the sport. The 86-year-old conquered the French Open titles in 1959 and 1960 and he reached a world no.3 rank. As reported by Agi, Pietrangeli said that in theory, it’s time for Roger to retire.

“I don’t understand what else he has to prove yet: Roger Federer is the one who won the most, he has earned a lot, maybe it’s time for him to stop. He’d come out with his head held high, as the world number 4, it’s not for everyone,” he commented.

However, Pietrangeli has still faith in Federer if the operation goes well.

“If the operation and rehabilitation can get Federer’s knee back in place, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him win again in 2021 because his talent, in all the years he’s spent on the court, has allowed him to run and get tired much less than the others: when he finishes a match he is rarely sweaty, from a tennis point of view he is much younger then his anagraphic age,” he added.
