Kyrgios calls the ATP selfish for trying to stage the US Open

Confusion and controversy about the opportunity to stage the US Open in 2020 are growing stronger and stronger. On one side, the big fishes like Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal have made it clear they do not like to play the slam at the current conditions; on the other one, many players and people working in the tennis industry are gasping for getting back to work.

Danielle Collins has been quite harsh in criticizing “selfish” Novak Djokovic for opposing to play the US Open at the current conditions (we all know that Novak is everything but selfish). However, Kyrgios has a similar remark (just going in the opposite direction) toward the ATP after slamming the organization for being “selfish” for trying to play the major.

“The ATP is trying to make the US Open go ahead. Selfish with everything going on at the moment. Obviously Covid, but also with the riots, together we need to overcome these challenges before tennis returns in my opinion,” said Nick.

Nick has always asked publicly the opinion of the big3 on Twitter, but it’s unlikely he will get a reply on social media.

Why the US Open should be played… if safe

It is worth stressing the fact that many sports have restarted, and the financial loss for people working in the industry is huge. The USTA has just fired 110 employees, and freelancers are already in dire straits. Therefore, staging the slam with the correct precautions could be the way to go.
