Why Stefanos Tsitspas is dreaming about competing for Greece in the Tokyo Olympics

Stefanos Tsitsipas has been a busy player in the past two weeks. The world number six played in two tournaments and reached the final at both events. He defended his Open 13 Provence title in Marseille and reached the final of the Dubai Duty-Free Tennis Championships last weekend. The Greek player lost in the final against Novak Djokovic. The Serbian was dominant in the final, winning the match 6-3 6-4 to continue his unbeaten run to the season.

Tsitsipas discusses his form at Grand Slam tournaments

Despite losing to Djokovic, Tsitsipas was pleased with his performances at both tournaments. After his defeat in Dubai, the Greek player had a lengthy interview with Times Portal. In his interview, the 21-year-old discussed his poor performances at Grand Slam tournaments. Since his semifinal run at the Australian Open last year, Tsitsipas has had some disappointing results at major tournaments. He lost in the fourth round to Stan Wawrinka at the French Open last year before a disappointing exit in the first round at Wimbledon to Thomas Fabbiano. At the US Open, Andrey Rublev knocked out Tsitsipas in the first round. The Greek player redeemed himself at the ATP Finals. He won the tournament, by recording a victory over Dominic Thiem in the final. However, his Grand Slam woes continued this year after he lost Milos Raonic in the third round of the Australian Open.

I will have tears in my eyes if I leave Tokyo with a medal

The world number six admits that he has not played to his full potential at Grand Slam tournaments. He also says that the next generation of tennis players will have to overcome the Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal if they are to establish themselves. While he hopes he can be the player to overcome the “big three’s” dominance, Tsitsipas is looking to make history at the Olympics later this year. In his interview Times Portal, he revealed that winning a medal in Tokyo will be a great achievement for him. As a Greek citizen, Tsitsipas said that the Olympics mean a lot to him since his country played such a huge role in establishing the games. He explained that winning at the global event would be one of the proudest moments of his life. “The Olympics means a lot to all Greek people. That’s where the Games come from. Greece is its origin. I’ll just have tears in my eyes if I leave Tokyo with a medal.”
